Step 1
Search close to home first, calmly
Most cats are found within a few houses of home and most dogs within a mile. Walk the last-seen area calling in a normal voice, and take something that smells of home. Check sheds, garages and under cars; ask neighbours to check theirs.
Step 2
Tell the people who see the most
Ring the nearest vets and the council dog warden with a description. Ask delivery drivers, postal workers and dog walkers on your street; they cover more ground than anyone.
Step 3
Post in local lost-and-found groups with a clear photo
One good photo, the area, the date and a way to reach you. A finder page link lets people message you without you posting your phone number publicly.
Step 4
Check your microchip record
A finder's first stop is a vet or rescue scanning the chip. If the phone number on the microchip database is old, the chip cannot bring them home. Update it now.
Step 5
Put posters where feet slow down
Bus stops, shop doors, park gates, vet notice boards. A poster with a QR code lets someone act on the spot instead of trying to remember a number.
